Founded 1992 · more than 30 years in Cologne

In Cologne since 1992. And still the same phone number.

INFONET Computer GmbH is an owner-managed IT service provider based in Cologne-Bilderstöckchen. We look after small and medium-sized businesses in the Rhineland – some of them for more than twenty years.

Our story

From Novell networks to Microsoft 365

When INFONET was founded in 1992, “networking” for most companies meant connecting a few computers to a file server. Since then we have guided clients through the move to Windows domains, the consolidation of physical servers onto virtual machines, the end of ISDN, the migration of Exchange to the cloud and the shift of entire workplaces to home offices.

What has not changed in that time: businesses do not want to think about IT. They want it to work. This attitude shapes how we work – we rarely recommend the newest technology, but rather the technology that has proven itself in day-to-day operation and that will still serve you in five years' time.

Today our focus is on ongoing support: we take over your entire IT operation, monitor systems around the clock, keep them secure and up to date, and are there when something is not working. Complemented by telecommunications, consulting and – where standard software is not enough – our own development.

Milestones

Four decades of IT – in five steps

We have guided our clients through every one of these transitions. That experience goes into every recommendation we make today.

The person behind it

The founder: an engineer, not an administrator

INFONET is not a company with changing management. It was founded in 1992 by Dipl.-Ing. Mohamed Khater – and he still runs it today.

Being an engineer is not just a line on his CV. He still works hands-on with the technology rather than just managing it: when you get a recommendation from us, it comes from someone who knows the systems behind it and would build them himself.

For him, technology is a means to an end, and the end is your business. That is why at INFONET the margin does not come first; the question of what will actually help you does. It is also why we sometimes advise against things – against the purchase that can wait another two years, or the solution that is bigger than the problem.

  • Graduate engineer (Diplom-Ingenieur). A technical education as the foundation, not a purely commercial view of IT.
  • The same owner since 1992. No takeover by a chain, no change of management, no new strategy every three years.
  • Certified – and still hands-on. Vendor certifications are part of it. What matters more is that the technology behind them is worked on hands-on every day.
  • The client's success before short-term revenue. A recommendation is not made because it sells well, but because it holds up.

Why this benefits you
A contact person who has mastered the technology himself does not need to check with someone else before deciding. That shortens the path when something goes wrong – and it prevents proposals that mainly benefit the provider.

How we work

Four principles you can hold us to

These are not mission statements for a poster in the corridor, but rules with concrete consequences for how we work together.

A named contact, not a ticket system

You call and speak to someone who knows your systems. No first-level desk that makes you spell out your company name first, no handing you on to colleagues who start from scratch. That puts limits on our size – and that is exactly why we do it this way.

Sometimes we recommend nothing at all

If a server will last another two years, we tell you so – even if a new purchase would be more lucrative for us. If a standard solution is cheaper than custom development, we recommend the standard solution. In the short term that costs us revenue. In the long term it is the reason clients stay.

Documentation instead of knowledge in someone's head

Every environment we support is documented so that another service provider could work with it as well. The access credentials stay with you, and licences are registered in your name. We deliberately do not create any technical dependency.

Predictable costs

Fixed monthly fees for ongoing operation, fixed prices for clearly defined projects. Where we bill by time spent, we tell you in advance what to expect. Surprises on the invoice are not part of our business model.

Expertise

What we can do – and what we deliberately do not offer

A small IT service provider cannot do everything equally well. We concentrate on the areas we have been working in for years.

  • Microsoft environments. Windows Server, Active Directory, Exchange, Microsoft 365, Hyper-V – our core area for more than two decades.
  • Virtualisation and storage. VMware and Hyper-V, Synology, classic NAS and SAN solutions, replication across two sites.
  • Network and security. Structured cabling, switching, Wi-Fi, WatchGuard and Sophos firewalls, VPN and segmentation.
  • Backup. Veeam, Acronis and Synology – with tested restores rather than blind faith in green ticks.
  • Telecommunications. 3CX in the cloud and on-premises, number porting, Yealink handsets.
  • Development. Custom software, web applications, apps and interfaces – where standard software is not enough.

What we do not offer: we do not run our own data centre, and we do not act as an external data protection officer. For both, we work with specialised partners and are open about where our responsibility ends.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the company

How long has INFONET been around?

INFONET Computer GmbH was founded in Cologne in 1992 and has been owner-managed ever since. The Managing Director is Dipl.-Ing. Mohamed Khater. Over the years, the focus has shifted from traditional hardware sales to complete support of IT landscapes and telecommunications systems.

How many employees does INFONET have?

We are a small, permanent team – deliberately set up so that every client has a personal contact person and does not have to explain from scratch with every call how their IT is set up. For specialised tasks, we work with long-standing partners.

Which industries do you mainly work with?

Retail, trades, manufacturing, tax and law firms, medical practices and service companies. What these clients have in common is that they run between 5 and 250 workstations and do not want to maintain their own IT department.

Are you certified?

Our team holds certifications from the vendors whose products we use – including Microsoft, VMware, WatchGuard, Sophos, Veeam, Acronis and 3CX. Certifications are a prerequisite rather than a sales argument: they secure access to vendor support and up-to-date product information.
